Barney’s humans dumped him at the shelter because he was “too old and didn’t listen well.” Imagine that. We don’t know who to feel more sorry for: Barney or his younger canine sibling that his family kept.
Sadly, Barney’s humans surrendered him to an overcrowded shelter which is forced to euthanize to make space, and Barney’s time was up, so D.C. PAWS Rescue stepped in to help this sweet dog out!
We expected a low-energy, senior dog and were pleasantly surprised to find an energetic, friendly, and happy boy who is eager to please. It’s clear that his previous family simply didn’t provide him with any exercise or stimulation… that’s likely why he didn’t “listen,” and it certainly explains his chubbiness. With some exercise and structure, Barney will be right as rain!
While certainly no longer a puppy, he will make a great walking or hiking partner, and has enough energy to go longer distances once he trims down a bit and gets conditioned for a more active lifestyle. He knows no strangers, has lots of vitality and life left in him, and would love a doting family to share it with.
Like most shelter dogs, Barney may need a refresher on house training and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS’ fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog.
The adoption fee for this dog is $250. If you are interested in adopting Barney, please submit an adoption application at http://dcpawsrescue.org/adoption-info/.
