DC PAWS adoption process
The steps we take to help you bring home a new pet
Complete an adoption application.
You must complete an adoption application to begin the process. The application helps us know more about you, your lifestyle, and what you are looking for in a pet. Our goal is to make sure a good match is made between the animal and the adopter. Not sure which animal would be best suited to your lifestyle? We are happy to help you through our matchmaking team. Simply indicate that your application is for pre-approval.
You can meet one of our dogs or cats by visiting a scheduled DC PAWS adoption events. You can also submit an application, and we can set up a meet and greet with a dog or cat listed on our website.
Please note that submitting an adoption application alone neither guarantees you priority in the dog or cat applied for, nor does it obligate you to adopt one of our dogs or cats.
Talk to an adoption coordinator.
This provides an opportunity for us to get to know you and explain what you should expect when bringing a new dog or cat into your home. This process also allows us to determine what type of animal would be a good fit for your family and lifestyle.
We′ll call your landlord/vet, when applicable.
We will speak with your landlord to ensure you are permitted to adopt a pet, and with your veterinarian to confirm that your existing pets are fully vetted. All dogs and cats in the home must be spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and on heartworm and flea/tick prevention.
Schedule a home visit.
One of our volunteers will visit your home to confirm that you can provide a safe environment for one of our dogs or cats.
Once approved, and you have identified the dog or cat you would like to adopt, you will sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee before bringing your new pet home. Unless otherwise specified, the adoption fee is $350 for adult dogs or puppies and $150 for cats. You will also need to purchase specified supplies before bringing home your new dog, including, but not limited to, a leash, collar and proper ID tag with your contact information.
